On the spot: Mayumi from Miaou.
Last week we interviewed Japanese nice guys and upcoming electro-pop sensation Miaou. Well we got in touch with Tokyoite, cat lover Mayumi for a quick chat to get to know her better! Read our Tokyoheads interview below…
What has been big in 2011? How about 2012?
Synthesisers! This year I’ve been using my Alesis Micron and Casio SK-1 a lot. It’s not new at all, but next year I’ll be using a Roland SH-101 a lot more I think.
What’s your biggest highlight of the year?
Finishing our new album!
Who is your favorite musician of all time?
Sonic Youth. I’ve been into them since I was a university student. I guess now they’re more famous for being Sonic Youth rather than their music though. Recently I’ve been into Twin Sister, I’ve been listening to them a lot since last year.
Name the last song you listened to?
Widowspeak, ”Puritan”. I’ve been listening to this a lot.
Best gig you ever played?
2005 in the o nest, Shibuya with Toe and Below the Sea. More than just the performance, there was a really good atmosphere – the bands and the crowd seemed to really be into it. It was a really special show.
Worst gig you ever played?
I don’t know – we’ve had lots!
Where is your favourite place in Tokyo?
Umegaoka. We recorded our new album there and I grew to like it pretty quickly. It has a pretty cool vibe.
What are you favorite fashion brands/styles
I like Ne-net and SM2.
What’s your Karaoke song?
I don’t do karaoke!
What is the last thing you bought?
A new iMac.
Who is the coolest guy AND the coolest girl on the tokyo party scene at the moment?
I don’t really know about the party scene but Shimpei Kaiho from the melting Bot label is cool. He always recommends cool new music when we meet and new sounds always help to give me new ideas. He DJs too – he’ll be playing at our album release party in October.
Please recommend something new to our readers…
It’s not available yet, but the op-1 synthesiser by Teenage Engineering looks great. http://www.teenageengineering.com/products/op-1
Fuji Rock or Summer Sonic?
Probably Fuji rock. But Summer Sonic is nearby so it’s good too.
Tokyo or Osaka?
I guess Tokyo? I don’t really know Osaka so well – I’ve only been there when we’ve been on tour.
Question from Mr. A (Damage)… When do you get crazy?
I don’t really get crazy, but I love drinking beer and talking about music with my friends.
Please make a question up for our next interviewee…!
Are you a cat or a dog person?
Lastly, what do you never leave the house without?
Like probably everyone, my iPhone.
Thanks Mayumi!
