Photographer, fashion blogger and face about town… if anyone is a Tokyohead, Dan Bailey is!
If you want to get an intriguing, honest and well-informed look at the Tokyo fashion and party scene, there’s no better place to start than tokyodandy.com … because they basically are the Tokyo fashion and party scene.
Dan hails from the mean streets of York in the North of England, and his partner in crime, Joe Kazuaki, is from the beautiful island of Okinawa.
Dan and Joe started Tokyo Dandy in 2008, originally setting out to “bridge the media gap between street style and high fashion”… something that they certainly seem to be suceeding in doing!
What is going to be big in 2011?
Independent spirit. Not just in Japan but globally I feel the technology that has brought a lot of people together is also enabling people to do their own thing creatively and get their message out there.
What was the highlight of 2010 for you?
Being able to share in so many of my friends successes – shows, launches, parties, birthdays – just by being ‘the photographer’.
Who is your favorite musician of all time?
This is one of those questions that could have a different answer a week later but if we’re talking ‘musician’ I’d have to say that I’m still buzzing over AIR in the Red marquee at Fuji Rock last year. It took me back to being 17 again listening to Moon Safari and they were simply amazing live.
Where is your favorite place in Tokyo?
Night time Trump Room or Trump House when my friends are having a party, day time Showa Kinen Koen – out in the suburbs it’s the best park in Tokyo, so big you need a bike to get around it.
What are you favorite fashion brands/styles?
I love PHENOMENON. Each collection is so different from the last, it’s street couture. Designer Big-O is a genius.
What is the last thing you bought?
A stack of magazines – BON, Another Magazine, i-D, Vanity Fair, Dazed & Confused, POP, commons&sense, V, V-man and LOVE.
What is the last song you listened to?
Gauntlet Hair ‘Heave’, I heard it at the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection show and it’s been first on my playlist since then.
What is your Karaoke song?
There are many. But I rarely get the chance to put them on as my friends are the kind of people that program 10 songs in a row. Having said that, when I am drunk I think I’m Jay-Z (With a Yorkshire accent).
Who is the coolest guy AND the coolest girl in Tokyo at the moment?
Girl – Yoon from AMBUSH. She designs some sick accessories, she’s got great personal style but above all she’s switched on to what’s happening in Tokyo and beyond.
Boy – Yoshiro from YATT. They’re my favorite DJ duo and I love Yoshiros work as a graphic designer, it defines Tokyo for me.
Please recommend something new.
TESCO in Tokyo. Baked beans are only a stroll away! [You can take the boy out of Yorkshire... ]
Fuji Rock or Summer Sonic?
Fuji Rock. The line-up is secondary to a weekend away in the mountains. It’s the most beautiful festival setting in the world – John Frusciante said so.
Tokyo or Osaka?
Tokyo. I love the vibe in Osaka, and yes it’s more friendly but everything’s happening here.
Question from Jommy “What is the DNA of your style?”
A double helix of BLACK.
Finally, what do you never leave your house without?
A disposable camera.
Please make a question, and we’ll ask it to our next Tokyohead.
What did you do last night?
