Meet tomharu

Poised to be the best interracial musical duo since Ronald & Ruby, tomharu have been quietly making music in Tokyo for about 3 years. They’re finally almost ready to take over your mind with their unique blend of melodic, emotional techno music.

1- What is going to be big this year?

haru: I’ve been using software mostly to make music till this point, but since a year ago I started buying hardware such as analog synths and drum machines. So this year for me personally, I’ll shift my production environment to those boxes from these boxes. And also planing to make my own electronic instrument. So fun, really.

tom: Roctrax, new Jamie Lidell, new M.I.A., more of The xx, short pants… I’m not too excited about anything so new at the moment. Maybe Lady Gaga will be big?

2- Who is your favorite band/artist/producer of all time?

haru: Belle and Sebastian. I even use their band name as my Mac’s password.

tom: Bright Eyes & M.I.A. Bright Eyes for great lyrics and painfully honest emo vocals. M.I.A. for constantly surprising me and making me dance like an idiot.

3- Where is your favorite place in Tokyo?

haru: Machida, where I’ve been living for 5years now. To go out, anywhere is fine.

tom: Tori Ton Kun in Shimokitazawa. The best izakaya you’ll ever find, with the friendliest staff in the world. And great food.

4- What are you favorite fashion brands/styles?

haru: I tend to like clothes made of natural materials. Simple shapes, good colors and textures. I don’t wear logos.

tom: My never-ending supply of Bright Eyes t-shirts and usually a pair of Carharrt jeans.

5- What is the last thing you bought?

haru: I bought Audio equalizer SND FB-14 from Noisebug, California.

tom: Some short pants. For real.

6- What is the last song you listened to?

haru: 864m / Jurgen Paape, from Pop Anbient 2010 KOMPAKT

tom: Missy Elliott -Izzy Izzy Ahh. Pretty incredible.

7- Who is the coolest guy AND the coolest girl on the tokyo party scene at the moment?

haru: My friend Tom Hall.

tom: Heso (or me) and Atsumi Smoooch! Heso is the ultimate person to do karaoke with.

8- Please recommend a new band, dj, designer or artist to our readers.

haru: A friend of mine photographer Kouichi Kurita from Sagamihara.

tom: The xx, Rye Rye, Holly Miranda, Throwcurve, Caucus.

9- Fuji Rock or Summer Sonic?

haru: No taico club? Well I would say Fuji Rock. I was in fact crazier on those mountains.

tom: Fuji Rock. Summer Sonic has good bands but no atmosphere. Fuji Rock has a similar atmosphere to Glastonbury and Roskilde, which means it’s fucking amazing.

10- Tokyo or Osaka?

haru: Tokyo.

tom: Tokyo for parties, Osaka for my best drinking partner.

Finally, what do you never leave your house without?

haru: Hopes and fears.

tom: My keys and my iPhone. And my incredible mind.
