Tokyoheads – Sumire Twee

Meet Sumire Twee… DJ, store owner, leader of Twee Grrrls Club, and soon-to-be playlist selector for Modern Fuss!

Sumire will soon be a familiar face here on Modern Fuss, as she looks set to become our first guest playlist selector! She’ll be recommending a collection of her favorite tracks every month.

Hey Sumire, welcome to Modern Fuss! Please tell us about yourself and what you do!

This is Sumire . Indie girls DJ with strict Riot Girl mind. I manage my shop called ‘VIOLET AND CLAIRE’ selling indie rock vinyls and many stuff which belong to that culture.

As for Twee Grrrls Club, I am chief of this girls DJ club. We spin only vinyls, back-to-back style.

Personally I am 24 years old, ordinary girl, born in Tokyo grew, up in LA.

How did Twee Grrrls Club start, and what is it about?

Twee from ‘Twee As Fuck’ (London based party) + Grrrls from ‘RiotGrrrls’ + club.

6 girls DJs select music for indie / dance floor and we are proud to spread international indie guitar pop music culture with a DIY/independent mind. We don’t spin CD-R. We don’t burn CD-R, but cassette tape is alright with us.

You seem so busy! What do you like to do in your free time?

Finding something new around me, like buying cute sweets and ace vinyls!

What do you think about the music and party scene in Tokyo at the moment?

There are so many parties around Tokyo but never enough for me….We wish we had more DIY/underground parties to make me surprised. But I really love to visit and DJ at Vice magazine party all the time.

What are your plans for 2010?

We will release a compilation album of ‘in’ indie pop and an original ‘cover’ album this year. Also making zines/mixed cassette tape.

My label will release a split cassette of The New House / Sea Lions this spring.

I will DJ/Party everywhere!

Tokyoheads Q&A

1- What is going to be big this year?

I think fashion goes back to the 70′s, like washed-out blue jeans of Jane Berkin. Music will be much more borderless, like Vampire Weekend, they have many influences from NY hip hop culture. So sounds will be mixed from lots of kinda music genres.

2- Who is your favorite band/artist of all time?

Vashti Bunyan (She will come to Tokyo in March!!)  / Comet Gain / Pains of Being Pure At Heart / Vivian Girls

3- Where is your favorite place in Tokyo?

Escalator Records / Warszawa Records / Disk Union (to dig for vinyls). Also, there are so many good cafes in Tokyo. My favorite is ‘New Port’ in Yoyogi-hatchiman.

4- What are you favorite fashion brands/styles?

Chloé + Miu Miu (High Fashion) + Cheap Monday + Topshop! I like Tavi from “Style Rookie“. She is a fashion genius!!

5- What is the last thing you bought?

Delicious sweets from Viron (Shibuya).

6- What is the last song you listened to?

JJ- Let Go, from their album ‘no.3′.

7- Who is the coolest guy and/or girl on the Tokyo scene at the moment?

I choose the girl thats the same age as me, The She Talks Silence. Very cool, queen of no wave sound.

8- Please recommend a new band or artist to our readers.

The New House from Tokyo. Their sound is like Vampire Weekend + Animal Collective!!And they look cute too :)

9- Fuji Rock or Summer Sonic?

Fuji Rock. I think Summer Sonic is a kinda show case, right? There is no live energy.

10- Tokyo or Osaka?

Tokyo!!! ‘Cause we have many record shops, many kinds. But, I love Osaka’s local culture too.

Finally, what do you never leave your house without?

My bicycle… to go everywhere!

Check out Twee Grrrls Club at their myspace and blog. And don’t forget to do a bit of shopping at the fantastic VIOLET & CLAIRE.
