Okay, okay, single speed ain’t nothing new – it’s been around since the dawn of the bicycle and really came into play back when having a BMX was part of being a child. Growing in popularity here in Japan as more of a fashion statement than a practicality we can’t help but feel that this Giant Bowery ’84 will take the minimalist single speed to the masses.
Fixed wheel riding with no brakes is hard enough at the best of times, couple that with the highways of Tokyo and about a billion pedestrians and we think you have yourself a real recipe for disaster. Luckily the Bowery ’84 comes with a freewheel option which makes a whole load of sense. The simplistic design is based on one of those old school track racers and has a ALUXX aluminium frame previously developed for the Los Angeles Olympic Games which makes a change from the usual carbon counterparts.
