One of Tokyo’s most interesting, unique and mental club nights is coming to an end this weekend.

bunny. is having its graduation ceremony, crowning off a year of great parties with one final night of debauchery. We caught up with two of its main organisers and stars, atsumi and AND from smoooch! to talk about how it started and why it’s going to end after just one year.

Why did you decide to start bunny. night?

atsumi: Well, I think all the club scenes are the same; especially the electro scenes in Tokyo. A lot of fashionable people gather, but most of the events have the same routine of DJs playing their music.
People in Tokyo always crave something new, and we were one of them. It felt like something was missing.
Before we were bunny., we were a DJ in a music bar. And even through those events, it felt like we needed something special.
All we were doing was just “club events”. What we wanted to show and give people was “parties” and that’s why bunny. started.
We’ve been getting all our DJ friends and practiced our looks and playing style then our DJ skills. I think what we need in “parties” are DJs who can perform while they are great at what they do.
Lately, we had DJ KYOKO[XXX] and SEX[LINDATUNE] as guests with Rhythm Droid (who we worked together at Fai in Aoyama in November 2008) as the LIVE ACT, and 5o and Taddy as our resident DJs.

atsumi: まず既存のクラブシーンは似たようなものばかりで、特に東京のElectroのシーンはせっかくファッショナブルな人が集まりやすい環境にあるのに
ただ単に次々とDJがプレイして終わっていくだけのスタイルのイベントがとても多いと思う。
東京の人ってすごく貪欲でどんどん新しいものを欲しがるし、私たちもその中の一人で、どこかそれを物足りなく感じてた。
私たちはbunny.を始める前に、ミュージックバーでずっとDJをしてたんだけどそのイベントを通しても、もっと何かスペシャルなコンテンツが必要だと気づいたの。
今までやってたのは全部 “パーティ” じゃなくてただの “クラブイベント” だった。
私たちがDJをしたり、みんなに提供したい世界は “パーティ”なんだって気づいてbunny.は始まったの。
最初はDJをやってる友達をかき集めて、DJスキルよりもビジュアルやプレイスタイルを重視してた。
“パーティ” に必要なのは上手いDJじゃなくてパフォーマンスの出来るDJだと思ったから。
最初はDJ KYOKO[XXX]とSEX[LINDATUNE]をゲストDJとして、2008年11月に青山のFaiで共演したRhythm DroidをLIVE ACTとして招き、レジデントDJは 5oとTaddyの２人だった。)

What was the DJ lineup for the first event?

atsumi: smoooch![bunny.]／5o[DA MONDE]／Taddy[PR!ZE]／GARIS GARIS ／AITA[ignite]／ARI RAIKA／ikura

How successful was the first event? Was the party popular from the beginning?

atsumi: At first, bunny. was an unknown party, but about 140 people showed up in SECO (where there’s only one floor); we were so excited!
But we weren’t the only ones who lead this to work out; it was all our staff and everyone who helped us.
Since it was our first party, everyone helped and guided us through it. I didn’t realize how much hard effort and work was put into it, and I learned so many things from this.
I still can’t believe that it’s been a year since we first started as bunny.(3/6/2009). As bunny. got more popular, we, smoooch! got more chance to get popular too.
And before I knew it, people would come up to me and say “We’re smoooch!’s fan!” when we went to clubs!
But this isn’t just all our work; it was mostly from everyone who helped and supported us and lead us up to were we are.

atsumi: 最初のbunny.は誰も知らない無名パーティにも関わらず、１フロアしかないSECOに約140名ものお客さんが来てくれて、本当に嬉しかった。
でもそれは私たちが成功させたっていうよりは、何よりも協力してくれた出演者やスタッフのおかげだと思う。
私たちにとっては初めてのパーティだから、みんな色々な面で手助けしてくれたしプロモーションも頑張ってくれた。
オーガナイズするということがこんなに難しかったんだって沢山得るものがあったよ。
１回目の2009年３月６日に開催したbunny.から、もう１年も経ったなんて信じられないけどbunny.を知ってもらえば知ってもらうほど、私たちsmoooch!も色々な人に知ってもらう機会が増えたんだ。
いつの間にかどこのクラブに遊びに行ってもみんな友達で、 “smoooch!のファンなんです！”って声までかけてもらえるようになったの。
でも本当にこれは私たちだけの力じゃない、今まで協力して支えてくれた人達のおかげ。)

How would you describe the sound and style of bunny.?

atsumi: As I first said, I wanted to give “parties” when we started bunny. but I’m not sure if I was able to deliver it to everyone’s heart.
AND: But bunny. always has a theme or contents, and for each and every one of the guests to enjoy the club as how they take it.
atsumi: You know how bunnies can’t live when they’re alone? “bunny.” was named this way because bunnies are usually animals with sexual greed, and we wanted to fulfill the greed that no one could see with our parties. It was a hope that as long as you’re in the space of bunny., you would forget your stress you had at work or school and just enjoy yourself.
Many of people asks “Why is there a period at the end?”.
Well, “bunny” is just a simple word, right?
But when you add a period it becomes part of a sentence or a phrase.
It somehow solves someone’s…something’s.. feeling of frustration.
Those feelings and thoughts are put in to “bunny.”

atsumi:ー 最初に答えたように、本当の意味での “パーティ” 創りがしたくてbunny.を始めたけどお客さん全員にそれが伝わってるのかは正直わからないところ。

AND: ー でもbunny.は必ず毎回テーマやコンテンツがあるから、
お客さん一人一人が新しいクラブの楽しみ方を見つけて帰ってもらえると嬉しいな。
atsumi: ー ウサギって “寂しいと死んじゃう”って言われてるでしょ？
“bunny.”の由来は、ウサギは多産や性欲の象徴だから、私たちがそういう目に見えない欲をこのパーティで埋めてあげるよって意味でbunny.になったの。
bunny.の空間に足を踏み入れている間は、普段仕事や学校で抱えているストレスなんかを解消してめいっぱい満たされた気分でいてほしい。そういう願いだった。
“どうして .(ドット)がついてるの？” ってよく聞かれるけどbunnyって単語だけだと、ただのウサギって意味だけどドットが付くことで文章の一部になるでしょ？
いつも誰かの～、何かの～、ウサギみたいな欲求不満な部分を代弁して解消してあげたい。そういう気持ちが “bunny.”には込められているの。)

Why do you think bunny. is different from other parties in Tokyo?

AND: Well, I think most parties concentrate on the theme and contents. There’s parties with dress codes, but I don’t think there’s a party that sinks so much into the theme as much as we do.
We always think of the guests first. They give us their money; I want them to have a time that they’ll never forget.
atsumi: From that point, I think the most fun time we had was the event we had in the TRUMP ROOM in July; the theme was “Midnight Swim” and we made it a bit of an “adult” party.
We made the lounge like an undersea porno shop, and we sold “toys” and gave out “Adult’s goggles” to everyone. It really made it feel like a “Midnight Swim”=”Adults’ way of swimming”
AND: To make it all fit into the theme, atsumi did all the decorations as matilde a. It’s hard to color a club with our bunny. color. It takes a lot effort and money. And when we did bunny. in SECO, it took us 17hours just to set up! So bunny. usually stays in the club for about half a day lol.
atsumi: Oh, the one that took the most effort was the chandelier we made out of flowers and stuffed animals for a event we did in September. We made the center with styrene foam; it took us one week to complete it! It was hard to get it down from the ceiling too.

AND: ー やっぱりどのパーティよりもテーマやコンテンツをすごく重視してると思う。
ドレスコード付きのパーティはよくあるけど、こんなにテーマを徹底したコンテンツや空間づくりはあまり見かけないんじゃないかな。
コンテンツはお客さんへの付加価値を常に考えてる。せっかくお金を払って来てもらうんだから、何か思い出として残るものを僕たちからも返してあげたいって思うからね。
atsumi: ー その点で一番おもしろかったのは７月にTRUMP ROOMで行った時に、テーマを “Midnight Swim”にして少しアダルトなパーティにしたんだ。
ラウンジを海外のポルノショップみたいにして、そこで大人の玩具を売ったり、お客さん全員に “大人のゴーグル” と題した仮面を配ったりした。
まさに “Midnight Swim”＝”おとなの泳ぎ方”って世界観になったよ。
AND: ー 空間デコレーションは毎回クリエイター名義でmatilde a.としてatsumiがやってきてたんだけど、クラブという既に作り上げられた空間をbunny.色にデコレイトするのは、すごく大変。
労力もお金もたくさんかかる。SECOでbunny.をやるときは、準備のために入り時間が17時とかだったよ！だからbunny.の日は半日もクラブにいる。lol
atsumi: ー 一番大変だったのは、９月の時に作ったお花やぬいぐるみで出来たシャンデリアかな。
発砲スチロールを芯にして、製作に一週間以上かかったの。天井から吊るす作業もすごく大変だった。)

How has bunny. grown since the first party? Do you think it’s much bigger or better now?

atsumi: It felt like we were getting better and more well known as we had more parties, but no matter how much good party material we had, it was how we advertized the event that was hard.
AND: We got advice from other event organizers, and we came up to this point. We are probably here because of every supporter.
To tell you the truth, I wasn’t thinking of ending it in a year; there would’ve been a lot of things I could’ve learned. But a good friend once told me, “The end is the Start”.
atsumi: You end something, to start something. So I think the experience we got from bunny. was so good for us.

atsumi: ー 回数を増すごとに成長できてるって感じてやってきたけど、どんなに良いパーティ材料を用意してもそれをいかにうまく告知の段階でお客さんに伝えるかがすごく難しかった。
AND: ー 他のイベントオーガナイザーに相談したり、色々とアドバイスをもらってここまで来れたと思ってるからやっぱり周りの人達に助けられて続けてこれたんだと思う。
本当はたった１年で終わりにするつもりなんてなかったし、これからもっと学ぶことはたくさんあったと思うけど “終わりは始まり” って大切な友達が言ってくれたんだ。
atsumi : ー 何かを始めるために終わりにする。だからこれまでのbunny.としての成長は私たちにとっては十分すぎるくらいだと思う。)

What was your favourite bunny. party and why?

AND,atsumi: All of it! Because we did our best in each and every one of them.

AND,atsumi : ー 全部お気に入り！すべて全力だったから。)

Who played your favourite DJ/live set at a bunny. party?

AND: That’s a tough question…. I think the ones who were really into it were 5o and Taddy who started bunny. with us. They have great DJ skills (of course) but they have a way of knowing and playing which music the audience wants to hear. That’s probably why people go to them.
And I won’t forget, the same who started with us, Rhythm Droid. I’ve never seen an artist who was so into music. Even when we’re out, they would say “I need to make music, gotta run.”
This year, as you can see, he keeps on adding new styles in and changing. He’s always nice but he turns in to “cool” when he’s playing. Even us, who don’t listen to techno or house, love his music.
He’s probably the one who understood how we felt about bunny. the most.
atsumi: We only invited DJs we loved so its a hard choice… but I think the one we can hope for the future the most is CHERRY BOYS.
We’re great friends; we meet at least once a week. We’re so close together, that it makes us feel that we need to work together. They changed their partners a few times, and the first time they performed as CHERRY BOYS was the event for bunny. we had in January, but they filled a spot of being after the guest DJ. They’re improving, and we can’t just stand and lose.
AND: Of the guest acts, the most shocking one was NERDZ ERA at the event in January. They have the DJ style of using computers, and they have a genre most focused right now: called the Dub Step. Their performance of mixing Dub Step and Electro was just amazing.
They’re performing at 3/20 final bunny., so it’ll be a waste if you don’t see them!

AND : ー すごく難しい質問だけど、一番頼りにしてきたのはやっぱりbunny.を一緒に始めた5oとTaddyかな。
彼らはDJスキルももちろんあるんだけど、お客さんが今かけてほしい曲っていうのをその場で察知してプレイするのがすごくうまい。
だから彼らの周りには人が集まるんだと思う。
あとは同じく初回から一緒にやってくれたRhythm Droid。あんなに音楽に対して熱心なアーティストは見たことがない。
クラブで遊んでても “音楽作らなきゃいけないから帰るね”って当たり前のように言うんだよ。
この１年で僕たちが見ててもわかるくらい、プレイスタイルも新しいものを常に取り込んで変化しつづけてるし、
普段はすっごく優しいのにプレイ中は本当にかっこいいんだ。TechnoやHouseをあまり聞かない僕たちも彼の音楽は大好き。
僕たちのbunny.に対する想いも、もしかしたら一番理解してくれてるのって彼かもしれないしね。
atsumi : ー 大好きなDJしか出演をお願いしてこなかったから本当に選ぶのが難しいところなんだけど、今後一番期待してるDJはCHERRY BOYSかな。
彼らとは週に１回必ず会うほど仲が良いんだけど、一番身近だからこそ一緒に頑張っていきたいなって常に感じてる。
彼らは相方が何回か変わって、CHERRY BOYSとして出演してもらったのは１月のbunny.が初めてだったんだけど、
ゲストDJの後っていう大役をしっかりやり遂げてくれた。どんどんDJプレイも上手くなってるから私たちも負けてられないの。
AND : ー ゲストアクトとして招いた中だと、衝撃的だったのは１月に出演してもらったNERDZ ERA。
彼らはPCを使ったライブスタイルのDJをするんだけど、今クラブシーンで注目されているDub Stepというミュージックジャンルをやっていて
Dub StepとElectroのミックスしたプレイは本当に圧巻だった。
彼らは3/20のファイナルbunny.でも出演してくれるから見ないと絶対損だと思う！)

How do you decide on the themes for bunny. night, and which one was your favourite?

atsumi: We both were learning the beauty of clothing; we both liked creative things. Creating themes wasn’t that hard; sometimes using the ideas we had in our pasts. But how to make the themes real, was the real problem.
AND: We used a lot of our time thinking about how to create the contents and decorations. Even when we had a great idea, it’d be a waste if the guests didn’t get it.
atsumi: My favorite was the “Pajama Soldier”. Of course, the dress code was “PJs”; we created a bedroom like space in the lounge and got tons of pillows. We had twisters and cards and we had fun, but the best was the pillow fight! We fought until our pillows didn’t look like pillows anymore lol.
It was “soldier” all right; we had guns painted in white. We got a lot of cute party photos.
AND: We started a little late since the set up time took us 15 hours, but watching everyone have fun was so heartwarming… it made me want to cry.

atsumi : ー 二人とも過去に服飾を学んでたり美容師をやってたりして、昔からクリエイティブな事が好きだったから
テーマを決めるのは毎回意外と簡単だった。過去に作品づくりをして、やってみたかったテーマだったりしてね。
でもそれをどうテーマとして確立するかは難しかったかな。
AND : ー どんなコンテンツを用意して、空間デコレーションはどうしようかって部分には毎回結構な時間を要してた。
僕たちが面白いと思ったテーマを掲げても、それがお客さんに伝わらなかったら意味がないからね。
atsumi : ー 一番お気に入りのテーマは “Pajamas Soldier”。ドレスコードはもちろん “パジャマ” で、ごろごろ寝転がれるベッドルームみたいなスペースをラウンジに作って枕を大量に用意したの。
ツイスターやトランプも用意したからみんな楽しんでくれたんだけど、一番はPillow Fight！
枕がぼろぼろになるくらい、すごくみんな白熱してた lol
ソルジャーっていうくらいだから真っ白に塗った銃も用意したりして、可愛いパーティフォトがたくさん撮れたよ
AND : ー 僕たちはこの時の入り時間が15時とかで準備の段階で少し疲れてたんだけど、
みんなが楽しんでいる光景を見てたら感激して泣きそうになったよ。)

What’s the next theme that you would like to do if bunny. continued?

AND: Our next theme is “TWIN GRADUATIOM!”
We wanted to do “pair looks” for our dress code, and we finally got to do it on our last event.
atsumi: Since bunnies are lonesome, they have to graduate as twins. And since it’s our 1st Anniversary, I have an image of it being a formal kind of event. It’s March, and it’s just in time for graduation season. In so many ways, it’s our “graduation”.

AND : ー 次のbunny.のテーマは “TWINS GRADUATION!”
前々からペアルックをドレスコードにしてみたくて、最後にやっとできたって感じ。
atsumi : ー ウサギは寂しがりやだから、卒業式は二人で双子として参加しなくちゃいけない掟なの。
実はこれが1st Anniversaryになるから少しフォーマルなイメージもあったんだ。
３月で卒業式シーズンだし、ちょうどよかった。
いろんな意味での “卒業” なの。)

Why did you decide to end bunny.?

AND: If I give only one reason, it was to concentrate on our DJ career as smoooch!. Of course as we continued bunny., we had chances to get our names known, but as much as we gained ideas and qualities we wanted for each of them, it became hard to balance both.
atsumi: The good thing about us is that we don’t compromise. If we get greedy and continue both, it wouldn’t turn out to be our best. That’s just rude to the guests. So far, we’ve been sending our images and thoughts by parties, but from now on, I want to as DJ smoooch!. That’s probably the main reason.

AND : ー 一言で言うと、smoooch!としてのDJ活動をもっと本格的にやりたいから。
もちろんbunny.を続けてきたことで、DJとして名前を知ってもらう機会が増えたんだけど
どちらも続けてきてそれぞれにこだわりを持てば持つほど、だんだん両立が難しくなってきた。
atsumi : ー 私たちの良いところは妥協をしないところだと思ってる。
欲張って２つを続けていったら、絶対中途半端になる。そんなのお客さんに失礼だなって最近ずっと感じていたの。
今まではパーティという形を主として私たちの想いや世界観をみんなに伝えてきたけど、
これからはDJ smoooch!として伝えられるようになりたい。それが一番の決定打かな。)

Which DJ set are you looking forward to most at the final bunny. party?

AND, atsumi: Our special guest DJ, DEXPISTOLS!
Normally, they perform at ageHa or other big clubs, and having an opportunity to watch them play from near is so exciting!
We’ve watched them perform before a few times, and we’ve been amazed every single time; I can’t wait to see how it will be in this event.

AND, atsumi : ー やっぱりスペシャルゲストDJのDEXPISTOLS！
普段彼らは、ageHaなんかの大規模なクラブスペースでプレイすることが多いアーティストだから間近で見ることが出来る彼らのプレイがすごく楽しみ。
彼らのプレイは何度も見てるけど、毎回驚かされるから今回もすごいことになりそうだよね。)

What will you do next? Continue DJing? Start producing original music?

atsumi: From now, I want to concentrate on creating and remixing music, and release a song and make it into a form that people could remember us from.
AND: But we’re still continuing to be DJs. I can’t give up something this much fun. Someday, I want to perform with mostly our songs; now that’s my dream.
I think we have a lot of music we want to tell people.

atsumi : ー 今後は楽曲制作に取り組んで、いずれは曲をリリースして世の中に形として残るものをオーディエンスに返したい。
AND : でもDJはずっと続けるよ。こんなに楽しい事、やめるなんてもったいない。
いつかDJプレイ中にかける曲のほとんどを自分たちの曲にするのが夢。
たぶん僕たちはもっともっとみんなに伝えたい音楽があるんだと思う。)

Will you start a new party?

AND: I want to start new parties when we feel like we grown as real artists.
atsumi: I don’t know how many years it’ll take, but when that day comes, I want it to make it an only members secret party. I wanted to do that for a long time!
For that to come true, I’m going to secretly pass out member passes at the 3/20 final bunny., so it’ll be great if you would keep it safe with you until we become big.

AND : ー いつか自分達がアーティストとして成長できたなと感じる時が来たらまたパーティはやりたいと思ってる。
atsumi : ー 何年後になるかわからないけど、その時は会員制のシークレットパーティにするつもり。
実はそれも前々からやってみたかったことなんだ。
そのための会員パスを3/20のファイナルbunny.でこっそり配るから、私たちがビッグになるまで大切に保管しておいてもらえたら嬉しいな。)

Do you have a final message for the people who went to bunny. night?

AND: One year passed by quick, but we want to give out all the love we got from bunny. as DJ smoooch!
atsumi: One year was really short, but it became our life treasure.
For a cute, innocent bunny to be in your heart forever…..
AND, atsumi: Thank you so much!!!!!!!

AND : ー １年という時間は本当にあっという間だったけど、
これまでbunny.を通して皆さんからいただいた沢山の愛を
今後はDJ smoooch!として皆さんに返したいです。
atsumi : ー １年間という短い期間だったけど、本当にこの１年は私たちにとって人生の宝物になりました。
皆さんの中に可愛くて貪欲なウサギちゃんがずっとずっと居続けますように…。
AND, atsumi: ー 本当にありがとうございました！！！)
